It is a memory play. The characters show their memories. Tom is an aspiring poet who works in a shoe factory, to support his mother Amanda and sister Laura. Amanda from noble family and always tells her children about her youth. She tells she had a lot of suitors. But she is disappointed that Laura, who wears a brace on her eg and is painfully shy, does not attract any man. Laura study in a business college so that in future she will run her own business. After some weeks, Amanda discovers that Laura does not go to college and spend her time alone wandering in the city.
Then Amanda decides that marriage is last hope for laura and she begins selling magazine subscriptions to earn the extra money. She thinks that this will help to attract suitors for laura. Tom who is only care taker of his family spend his time in movies, drinking alcohol, and, literature than in warehouse job. During one of the most frequent arguments between mother and son, Tom accidently breaks many of the glass animal figurines that are Laura’s most prized possessions.
Amanda and Tom discuss about laura’s marriage.Amands asks Tom to keep an eye out for suitors at that warehouse. Tom selects jim O’connor, his friend and invites him to dinner. He thinks jim is best suitor for his sister Laura Amanda asks questions about jim and becomes happy to know that he is a man who has set his mind on career advancement. She prepares a superb dinner for jim and says to laura wear a new dress
At the last minute, Laura learns the name of her caller, she had a crush on jim in high chool . When jim comes, Laura opens the door and then disappears. Tom tells jim that he has used the money for his family,s electric bill and plans to leave his job and family in search of somethingnew. Laura refuses to eat dinner with the others, due to her illness. Amanda wears a beautiful dress from her glamorous youth, talks frankly with jim through out the meal.
After ending the dinner the light go out for not paying the electric go out for not paying the electric bill. They light candle and Amanda encourages jim to entertain Laura in living room. Laura is nervous due to her illness, but his warm and open behavior draws her out of her shell. She confesses that she knew and liked him in highschool but was too shy to approach him. Laura reminds him of the nick name he had given her. “Blue Roses” due to her illness in high school. Laura then shows him her favorite glass animal, a unicorn jim dances with her, but in the process, he accidently knocks’ over the unicorn, breaking of its horn Laura then forgive him.
Jim then kisses her, but soon apologizes explaining that he was carried away by the moment and that he had a serious girlfriend. But Laura gives him the broken unicorn as a gift. Amanda comes in the living room. She is very happy. But when jim hastily explains that he must leave because of a meeting with his fiancée.
Amanda says good bye to jim. But she becomes furious at Tom, who had not known that jim was engaged. She says him an inattentive, selfish drawer. Tom decides to leave his job mother and his sister. But after leaving his family, he feels that he cannot leave without his sister and mother.
